Unboxing and First Impressions

The Hygger HG-978 arrived in a compact box. Inside, I found the LED light itself, a power supply unit, a small controller, and the user manual. The light's design is surprisingly sleek and modern, with a metallic black finish.

Measuring approximately four and a half inches across, it's wider than many other LED strips I've reviewed. The aluminum body feels substantial and well-made. The included mounting brackets seem sturdy and straightforward to install.

LED Specifications and Features

The Hygger HG-978 boasts multiple color LEDs designed for planted aquariums. It includes 6500K white, 455nm blue, and 620nm red LEDs, which are excellent for plant growth. The addition of green LEDs, while not essential for photosynthesis, enhances the overall color presentation of fish and some plants.

The LEDs are covered with a rubbery, silicone-like material, providing IP68 waterproof protection. This means it should withstand submersion, a critical feature for aquarium lights. The controller allows for brightness adjustment, timer settings (6, 10, or 12 hours), and a 24/7 mode with a pre-programmed light schedule.

Performance and Brightness Test

I tested the Hygger HG-978 over a four-foot macro algae aquarium. I was pleasantly surprised by its brightness, even when compared to my existing four 54-watt T5 lights. The light spread is also quite impressive.

I further tested it on a larger four by two by two tank, comparing it to a more expensive Tri-Spec 2 light. While not as bright individually as the Tri-Spec 2, two Hygger units would likely achieve comparable brightness at a significantly lower cost. The color rendition on both tanks remains excellent, showcasing vibrant plant and fish colors.

IP68 Waterproofing Test

The Hygger HG-978's IP68 rating promises full submersion capability. I conducted a test by fully submerging it in the large aquarium. After ten minutes, all the LEDs remained functional, a testament to its robust waterproofing. Although water ingress into the casing is possible, the LEDs themselves are protected, preventing damage.

The plastic casing is merely protective; the actual waterproofing is below it, directly on the LEDs. I removed the casing for drying to prevent potential corrosion from the salt water.

Lux Test and Final Thoughts

A lux test, measured 25 inches down, revealed a reading of 1218 lux. This was lower than expected, but still impressively bright given the price point.

The Hygger HG-978 is a surprisingly bright, full-spectrum aquarium LED light with excellent color rendition and a competitive price. The inclusion of an IP68 waterproof rating and a sleek design make it a top contender in the budget aquarium lighting market. Despite the slightly lower-than-anticipated lux reading, it is well worth consideration for smaller to medium sized tanks, and for those who prioritize budget friendliness.
