This is an aquascaping journey chronicling the evolution of my fish tanks and a bittersweet farewell. A year ago, I relocated all my aquariums to a dedicated shed, transforming my hobby. This dedicated space, far from creating distance, fostered a deeper connection and allowed for improved organization and environmental control, creating a peaceful haven for my aquatic creations. The move significantly enhanced my aquarium-keeping experience, allowing for focused maintenance and reduced household distractions. This post details the successes and challenges, including a recent cyanobacteria outbreak and its successful treatment. I'll share my philosophy on aquascaping, focusing on the rewarding journey of creating and nurturing miniature ecosystems. I'll discuss the importance of water quality, particularly for immersed plants, and the surprisingly low-maintenance nature of a balanced ecosystem. Finally, I'll share the sad news of the passing of my beloved cat, Tiny, and exciting plans for a new Asian-themed aquarium project.
Pros And Cons
- Do well in soft water

Relocating My Aquarium Paradise
A year ago, I moved all my fish tanks to my shed. Initially, I worried about feeling detached from my aquatic creations, but I've found the opposite to be true. The dedicated space has fostered a deeper connection and enjoyment of the hobby. The dedicated space allows for better organization and control over the environment.
My small shed has become a tranquil haven for my tanks, and the transition to this dedicated space has significantly enhanced my aquarium-keeping experience. I can focus more on maintenance and less on the worry of other household distractions. It's a peaceful space of concentration and dedication to the fish keeping.
Timmy's Tank Troubles and Triumphs
Recently, Timmy's tank battled a cyanobacteria outbreak. I treated it with a readily available online powder, a common solution for this issue. The treatment worked effectively with minimal disruption to the aquarium's ecosystem.

After a week, the cyanobacteria is dying off, leaving the cleanup to the filter. A large water change will soon follow once the ecosystem is stable again, ensuring the recovery is thorough and sustainable. Careful management prevents upsetting the balance further.
The Art of Aquascaping: My Creative Process
For me, the best part of aquascaping isn't the fish or the tank itself; it's the journey of creating and nurturing a miniature world. The process of building and evolving a thriving ecosystem is the most rewarding part of the hobby.
Unlike some who keep their aquariums for years, I prefer creating environments for about six months before resetting. This allows me to try different styles and designs, constantly experimenting and learning.
Water's Role in Plant Growth
Water quality plays a crucial role in plant health and success. Immersed-grown plants, commonly used in aquascaping, adapt better to soft water than hard water. In hard water, they often melt and require regrowth from cuttings.
My experience has shown that soft water is ideal for immersed plants, reducing plant loss. Hard water necessitates frequent plant trimming or even restarts from scratch, a common practice among experienced aquascapers.
Low-Maintenance Aquarium Success
My two-month-old ecosystem aquarium thrives with minimal maintenance. The key is establishing a balanced environment with excellent substrate layering and plant selection. Achieving this perfect balance requires dedicated effort initially but pays off immensely.
Once balance is achieved, only water top-ups are needed. This approach allows me to enjoy a thriving aquarium with minimal ongoing workload, demonstrating that a well-established ecosystem functions effectively with minimal disruption.
Saying Goodbye to Tiny
Sadly, I had to say goodbye to Tiny, my beloved cat of 14 years. She had battled cat flu her whole life, and recently, her body could no longer fight it. This was a difficult decision, but one made with love and compassion.
My five-year-old son, Jacob, also mourned Tiny's passing. Even at such a young age, he understood the importance of letting go and found comfort in knowing Tiny wasn't in pain anymore.
Upcoming Projects and a Look Ahead
Despite the sadness, exciting projects are on the horizon. A new Asian-themed aquarium is under construction, showcasing stunning wood and a planned full build video. This new project includes beautiful plants and an environment suited to my prized guppies.

The new aquarium is progressing smoothly and is expected to feature a full build video soon. I look forward to sharing this exciting new project and upcoming content with my viewers
