The Aquarium Swap and Stand Upgrade

The project began with a significant aquarium overhaul. The old setup, featuring a disliked blue background and a stand with inadequate storage, was removed. This involved carefully extracting plants, Driftwood, and fish before draining the water using a python.

The old aquarium and stand were replaced with a new black aquarium and a more suitable stand. The new stand offered improved storage, concealing all filtration equipment and providing more usable surface space.

Introducing the Giant Driftwood Piece

The centerpiece of this aquascape was a massive piece of Mopani Driftwood, almost as large as the aquarium itself. Its size presented a challenge, but the payoff was a stunning focal point.

The Driftwood’s unique lines and detailing made it a captivating element. Fitting this immense piece required careful maneuvering and planning.

The sheer scale of the Driftwood transformed the aquarium, creating a dramatic and natural-looking environment. This impressive piece instantly became the highlight of the tank.

Aquascaping and Plant Selection

After multiple water changes to clear the cloudy water, the aquascaping process began. The challenge was to create three-dimensional depth in a narrow 55-gallon tank.

Anubias plants, known for their resilience and ability to attach to wood, were strategically placed in the Driftwood’s grooves. This created a lush green backdrop behind the central piece.

Other plants, including a striking 'Crypt' (possibly Cryptocoryne) and a large, spreading plant (possibly a variety of Aponogeton), were carefully positioned to complement the Driftwood and add visual interest.

Future Plans and Conclusion

The long-term goal is to transform the aquarium into a discus tank, although this will happen after a period of settling and water parameter testing. The filter media from the previous tank was retained to maintain beneficial bacteria.

The aquasolum substrate, previously used in a planted shrimp tank, provides a nutrient-rich base for plant growth. The addition of CO2 and fertilizers will further support the plants.

The aquascape’s design, especially the large Driftwood, is well-suited for discus. The filtration system, using two canister filters, ensures excellent water quality. This ambitious project, despite the considerable time and effort, resulted in a visually stunning and thriving aquarium.
